Distress, Mortality & Training Fund

DM & T Fund - What is it? And What Is It Used for?

Now that the CEPU Tasmanian Branch is an independent, self sustaining organisation, it falls to every CEPU member to support fellow members at times when we need each other most.

The registered rules of our union allow for the establishment of a Distress, Mortality and Training Fund, better known as a DM&T Fund. The fund is established specifically to support members in times of personal distress, to ease the financial anguish which may add to the stress that exists at those times.

Your normal union fees directly finance the DM&T fund, with $1 per member per week being directed toward supporting the funds ongoing viability.

But what is the DM&T Fund used for?

A good example of when the fund may come into play is in the event of a CEPU member finding themselves in an unusual, unanticipated personal situation. This could include having a gravely ill child that needs special treatment, perhaps requiring the parents to travel interstate or even overseas. It may be called upon in the event where the CEPU member has suffered an accident not covered by an alternative insurance scheme, or even at the unexpected death of an active CEPU member. These are just a few examples.

The union considers each DM&T Fund claim on the basis of need, then refers them to the CEPU State Council for consideration. Grants from the DM&T fund are decided based on the circumstances of the event and are capped at a maximum of $5000.

It is not for when the car breaks down or needs a new set of tyres!

Here's How it Works - An Unexpected Death

As sad as it might sound, sometimes people do die unexpectedly. And if your family is dependant on your income it could bring devastating consequences for your partner and/or your children.

The Fund has the capacity to make a one-off payment of up to $5000 to a family in need, following the early or unforeseen death of a financial member.

How does a Family make a Claim?

The family needs to satisfy these basic rules to qualify for the Mortality benefit:

  • Only the immediate family of the deceased member - spouse, defacto, child or parent - is eligible to make a claim.
  • The deceased CEPU member must have been a contributing financial member of good standing for the five consecutive years prior to his/her death.
  • The claim must be made in writing and within six months of the member's death.

“The CEPU has never been a union to ignore its members’ needs. From the best agreements in the business to looking after CEPU families in times of need, the CEPU is always thinking about its members,” says CEPU State Secretary Kevin Harkins. “That's why the Union has set up the DM&T Fund, a fund specifically designed to assist CEPU families when they need us most. That's what we do.”
