The Electrical Trades Union of Australia says the Federal Government needs to guarantee Project Marinus will be kept in public hands, or it risks creating another major energy crisis in Tasmania.

The Federal Government's plans to fast track the second interconnector between Victoria and Tasmania included no details about funding or ownership structure.

"Rather than offering certainty about Project Marinus, the government has left us all in the dark about how the project will be properly funded," said Allen Hicks, National Secretary of the ETU. "We can't risk this vital piece of energy infrastructure being privatised or ending up in foreign hands.

"The government needs to guarantee Project Marinus will remain in public hands, otherwise we risk repeating the expensive mistakes of Basslink all over again."

The 2016 cable fault in the privatised Basslink, the exisiting interconnector between Tasmania and the national energy grid, caused a six month energy crisis in the island state.

"Tasmanians remember the false promises of the privatised Basslink and are right to be dubious about the benefit of additional interconnectors," said Michael Anderson, Tasmanian secretary of the Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union said.

"If done right Project Marinus holds potential for good, secure jobs. Coupled with publicly owned wind projects it could also deliver much needed energy security and lower power prices because the taxpayer would be in control.”

"But if these projects are privatised, communities will suffer and pay more for power, as we have sadly seen in Victoria and South Australia.”

“State and federal governments need to come clean on who will pay for and own these projects, then the public can decide who they want in control of their essential services.”
